Minimal details on Scarborough’s new combined school and municipal budget of $79.1 million were available before the Current’s print deadline Tuesday.
However, both budgets represent an increase from current spending levels, with the proposed municipal budget of nearly $31.6 million up about $1.2 million and the proposed school budget of $47.5 up significantly from the voter-approved $43.5 million for the current fiscal year.
The Town Council was scheduled to receive a full presentation on the new school and municipal budgets on Wednesday, April 6, from Town Manager Tom Hall and Superintendent of Schools George Entwistle, who is retiring June 30.
A public hearing on the combined spending package, which could raise the tax rate by 51 cents per $1,000 of valuation, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 6.
As proposed by Entwistle last spring, the original 2015-2016 school budget, stood at nearly $47 million. After rejecting that amount as too much, voters eventually approved a spending package that was reduced by $3.5 million on the third try.
Voters will once again have the final say on school spending this year during a June referendum.
