Bowdoinham — The Merrymeeting Arts Center in Bowdoinham has received a major grant from the Maine Humanities Council for “Hallowed Ground, Forgotten Voices,” a project inspired by the book “Spoon River Anthology” by Edgar Lee Masters. Its description of a small, Midwestern town through the voices of the dead in a series of revealing epitaphs informed MAC’s plans to focus on the historic, artistic and social role of graveyards in Maine towns. The book and project activities will be used to enrich community conversations and an exploration of intergenerational and end-of-life issues
Key activities of the project will include an art exhibit opening on June 17 at MAC; an original play by Stephen Legawiec to be staged in a Bowdoinham graveyard; a talk on gravestones as historical artifacts by Jay Robbins; a talk on “A Sense of Place,” by Franklin Burroughs; publication of epitaphs written by local high school students based on their research into historic personages; tours of local cemeteries; and a complete database of Bowdoinham graves.
