Southern Maine Community College in South Portland will play host next week to its first-ever TEDx event, with a theme of “Mind the Gap,” referring to the changes felt across the state as Mainers join the technological, economic and social evolutions of the 21st Century.
The event, which takes place Thursday, April 7, from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m., will further explore the ideas of old vs. new, tradition vs. innovation and struggle vs. triumph by acknowledging the space that connects them.
“The event’s organizers – students and faculty from around the college – hope that TEDxSMCC will inspire students and the broader community to consider new possibilities as they navigate their educational, personal and professional journeys,” according to a press release issued by the college.
“I’m very excited for the event,” said Alex Neill, an information technology student and a TEDx volunteer. “I hope it inspires all areas of the SMCC community to think about the future.”
The goal of TED, a nonprofit organization that began in 1984, is to spread new ideas and philosphies by helping communities, organizations and individuals create their own TED-style events at the local level.
Tickets are sold out, but the college has started a waiting list. Contact TEDxSMCCME@gmail.com with Wait List in the subject line to add your name.
