This is the time of year that those of us who follow the Christian tradition in practicing our faith turn to the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. To remember that we were loved so much that God was willing to experience the life that we lead. This included the worst of human nature where those who disagree and fear were willing to lash out in violence and physical harm. There are times when the actions of others makes us want to seek some kind of vengeance. Though we are not to allow ourselves to be run over, we also must remember that even when others disagree, the importance of responding in a respectful manor. To stand for yourself and seek vengeance are very different.
There are those who have taken steps which some see as being against groups or programs that do good things for the community. And there will be those who wish to rise to defense, to the point of disrespect to persons or property. But I ask that those who wish to do so, remember that all are still children of God. That love and respect is the path that we must stay the course with.
It is easy to walk what has become social norms, where getting even and responding with disrespect or violence make justice seem the right of might. Christ ask that we respond by turning the other cheek or carrying the burden an extra mile.
In remembrance of this season of Easter, where we are given the grace of one greater than we can fathom, I ask this prayer: Give me the will to not only accept the grace offered thru Christ, but to share it by giving love, respect and forgiveness to those who I may not agree with. Amen.
