WELLS — Principal Eileen Sheehy of Wells High School has announced that senior Kate M. Macolini, has been named a finalist in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program. Kate is the daughter of John and Melissa Macolini of Wells.

“What perhaps sets Kate apart from her peers nationwide is her absolute and total dedication to learning – not grades, not accolades – but a true love of learning,” commented Principal Sheehy. “This passion for knowledge has driven her to pursue every challenging course that Wells High School offers, as well as to undertake independent studies in topics that would otherwise be unavailable. Kate thrives on challenge.”

“I am really excited about it,” said Kate Macolini on being named a National Merit Scholarship finalist. “It’s a great honor, obviously, and also it’s given me more opportunity educationally.”

Scholarship winners are chosen from the finalists selected from each state and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, academic skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies and represent fewer than 1 percent of the initial pool of student entrants, based on official statistics released by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
