C.K. Burns is a delightful school. It’s roomy, airy and bright. It’s just the right size. Six hundred students attend Burns – grades three through five. We currently have two schools in Saco that funnel into Burns: Young and Fairfield. It’s time to put them together.
Enrollments are declining as the baby boomer’s children defer marriage and having children. Thornton knows this and is attracting the boarding students. Our primary schools do not have that opportunity.
Why in the world would we not take this excellent opportunity to consolidate both schools into a new modern one?
If this were a business, it would be done in a heartbeat. Think of the money Saco saves by having one principle, one set of support staff, even one utility bill. We could build, as all buildings should be built now, with solar panels covering the roof, geothermal heat, and sustainable materials. There could be a windmill on the property and we would pay no utilities. The school could be divided into wings to create the feeling of coziness for students.
Children assimilate quicker than you think. They’ll be fine.
