CLEARWATER, Fla. — Rachel Carlson, Felicia Lennon and Meghan Royle each had two hits Monday to lead Maine to a season-opening 7-4 softball victory over Indiana University-Purdue-Fort Wayne.

Lennon doubled and added two RBI, while seven different players scored a run for the Black Bears.

Molly Flowers picked up the win for Maine, striking out three batters in her two scoreless innings.

ST. JOSEPH’S 6, SAGE 0: Erica Boulanger pitched a complete-game shutout to lead the Monks (3-1) over the Gators (0-2) at Hancock Field in Clermont, Florida.

Boulanger let up four hits, walked none and struck out four, while Mariah Harrison went 3 for 4 with an RBI for St. Joseph’s.

The Monks pounded 11 hits in the contest and scored three runs in the top of the second to put the game away early.

Meghan Elliot added two hits and two RBI for the Monks.

ST. JOSEPH’S 14, JUNIATA 4: Jennifer Murphy and Kelsy Gaddy each had three hits to lead the Monks (2-1) over Juaniata (2-1) at Hancock Park in Clermont, Florida.

Murphy went 3 for 3 with three RBI and St. Joseph’s scored five runs in the top of the fourth to pull away for good.

Melissa Mayhew added two hits and three RBI for the Monks.

Kristal Smith picked up the win for St. Joseph’s, striking out seven and allowing one earned run in five innings.

ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS: Jameson Collins went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBI in the second game as St. Joseph’s split a doubleheader against Ursinus, losing the first game 12-4 and winning the second game 9-0 at Winter Haven, Florida.

Grayson Jennings picked up the win in the second game, with six scoreless innings allowing only three hits, while striking out eight and walking three.

Taylor Reuillard, Anthony DiPrizio and Joey Murphy each added two hits for the Monks in the second game.

Reuillard went 3 for 4 in the first game.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(1) UCONN 77, (21) SOUTH FLORIDA 51: Top-ranked and undefeated UConn won its third staright American Athletic Conference title in a rout at Uncasville, Connecticut.

Breanna Stewart scored 22 points and blocked seven shots, while freshman Katie Lou Samuelson added 13 points and a season-high seven rebounds for the Huskies (32-0), who extended the third-longest streak in team and NCAA women’s Division I history to 69 games.

(4) BAYLOR 79, (7) TEXAS 63: Nina Davis scored 22 points to help Baylor (33-1) win the Big 12 championship at Oklahoma City.

Alexis Jones added 16 points for the Bears and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player after averaging 15.7 points and 7.7 assists in three games.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

NC WILMINGTON 80, HOFSTRA 73: NC Wilmington (25-7) won its first Colonial Athletic Association title in 10 years and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament, getting 20 points from Craig Ponder in an overtime win over top-seeded Hofstra at Baltimore.

IONA 79, MONMOUTH 76: A.J. English hit a jumper with 1:39 left to break a tie and Deyshonee Much followed with a driving layup that he converted into a three-point play as second-seeded Iona beat top-seeded Monmouth at Albany, New York, to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament title and an NCAA berth.

CHATTANOOGA 73, EAST TENNESSEE STATE 67: Greg Pryor and Tre’ McLean each had 13 points as top-seeded Chattanooga held on to win at Asheville, North Carolina, to win the Southern Conference championship and an NCAA bid.

WISCONSIN: Greg Gard is the permanent replacement for retired coach Bo Ryan.

The university’s Board of Regents approved Gard’s contract on Monday night following his successful audition as the interim coach.

DREXEL: Coach Bruiser Flint was fired after a 15-year run without an NCAA tournament appearance. The longest-tenured active coach at one school without an NCAA berth, Flint went 245-217 with the Dragons and slumped to 6-25 this season. The Dragons went 3-15 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
