The Bowdoin women’s basketball team will travel to Amherst, Massachusetts, for its third-round matchup Friday with the University of Rochester in the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament.

The Polar Bears (22-6) and Yellowjackets (22-5) will play the first game of the sectional at a time to be announced, followed by a game between Amherst (28-1) and Stevens Institute of Technology (23-6).

The winner of Saturday’s sectional final advances to the national semifinals in Columbus, Ohio, on March 19. The championship game is April 4 in Indianapolis.

BASEBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS WPI: Dennis Meehan went 3 for 4 with a home run in the second game as St. Joseph’s opened its season with a doubleheader sweep against Worcester Polytechnic Institute, winning 6-3 and 7-0 in the RussMatt Invitational at Auburndale, Florida.

Josh Partridge picked up the win in the second game with five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while striking out five and walking none.

Nic Lops was 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored in the opener, and Taylor Reuillard lined a home run down the right-field line as the Monks jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Winning pitcher Nick Malatesta allowed three hits and struck out eight in five innings.

SOFTBALL

ST. MARY’S (IND.) 11, ST. JOSEPH’S 2: The Monks allowed six runs in the top of the first inning and lost their season opener in a game shortened to five innings at Clermont, Florida.

St. Joseph’s scored its runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Meghan Elliott and a double by Jennifer Murphy, who went 2 for 2 with a walk.

ST. JOSEPH’S 9, ROGER WILLIAMS 2: The Monks (1-1) scored in each of the first four innings as they built a 7-1 lead on the way to a win over Roger Williams (2-3).

Katie Chadbourne, Meghan Elliott and Carla Tripp – the first three batters in the lineup for St. Joseph’s – each had three hits as the Monks pounded out 17. All nine starters recorded at least one hit.

Tripp and Melissa Mayhew each drove in two runs.

Kylie McFadden was the winning pitcher, allowing eight hits and no walks while going the distance.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 19, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4: The eighth-ranked Bobcats (4-0) jumped out to 13-1 halftime lead and cruised past the Nor’easters (2-2) at Biddeford.

Charlie Fay and Jack Allard combined for five first-quarter goals as Bates outscored UNE 9-1.

Fay finished with five goals, and Allard had four goals and three assists.

Sam Cloutier, Connor Leggett, Mitch Mullin and Alex Zadworny scored for UNE.
