Marie was born in Kennebunk to Joseph and Elizabeth D’Ascanio. She was a 1941 graduate of Kennebunk High School, and attended Northeast Business College.
Marie married her high school sweetheart, Paul Cabana, on May 8, 1943, in Silver Springs, Maryland. They moved to Miami Beach, Florida, where Paul was stationed in the service. Marie loved Florida and would have stayed there, but Paul was transferred overseas, and her family insisted she come home. Every year, they vacationed in Florida, and every year, Marie threatened to stay there.
Marie worked briefly for the Saco Lowell textile manufacturing company before taking a job in the office at the Saco Osteopathic Hospital, working there until they closed their doors. After that, she worked for Biddeford Auto Parts, which eventually became United Auto, retiring from there in 1987.
Paul, with the help of his father, built their home in Saco, where they lived for 71 years until he passed away in 2014.
Marie lived at Seal Rock for the last couple of years suffering from Alzheimer’s. Constant companions, Marie and Paul had a wonderful life together, enjoying all of their days and each other’s company – life was good to them, and they in turn appreciated all they had in this life.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Paul Emile Cabana, on Aug. 7, 2014; three brothers, Anthony, Peter and Paul D’Ascanio; and her dear sister, Josephine Kezar.
They had no children, but nieces, nephews, cousins and family were always a constant and strong presence in their lives: Jovanna and John Paré; Todd and Lynn Kezar; Sheila and Bill Matthews; Skip and Laura D’Ascanio; Barbara Aliberti; Irene and (late) husband Roland LaVertue; Rita and husband Frank Nadeau; Priscilla and (late) husband Lucien Trempe; Robert, Norman and Denise Fournier; Bobby and Diane Cabana; and special friend Lynn Day.
A service in honor of Marie’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 3, at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St., Saco. An hour of visitation will be from 10- 11 a.m. prior to the service, with interment immediately following at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco.
