PITTSTON – “Leonard B. Moody, Esq., of Brooklyn, N.Y., who spends his summers, together with his family, in East Pittston, is to have built in that town an elegant summer residence, which will cost some ten or twelve thousand dollars.”

So the Gardiner Home Journal reported on May 14, 1890, announcing the imminent construction of what is now known as the Moody Mansion, a 7,000-square-foot Queen Anne-style Victorian. The design was by the Parfitt Brothers architectural firm, of Brooklyn. By mid-October, the project was sufficiently advanced for the paper to note that C.O. Turner of Gardiner had been hired to do the painting.

Today, the landmark home is on the National Register of Historic Places; the above information appears in the property application for that distinction. The property on 4.4 acres is also for sale, listed at just $248,000. A huge barn is included.

The low asking price is due to the condition of the home. Following Moody’s death in 1905, it served a number of purposes, and underwent some alteration, over the decades.

Most recently, new owners made excellent progress in carrying out historically appropriate restoration work, until that work was interrupted last August.
