Three Stormers competed at Noble in the Class A Wrestling State Finals on Saturday, Feb. 13 – Jeremy Sendrowski, John Stolz and Aren Dickman – with Sendrowski having the best day. Sendrowski, State Champ last year as a freshman, defeated Caleb Frost of Bonny Eagle to finish third in the 120-pound weight class.

Sendrowski won his first match, against Jabbar Belin of Mt. Ararat/Brunswick, a pin just 41 seconds in. But Delgallo prevailed in the next round, besting Sendrowski 18-6 and bumping him to the consolation bracket. There, Sendrowski crushed Skowhegan’s Richard Oberg 18-0 and earned the opportunity to face off with Frost.

Scarborough coach Mike Cyr remarked on Sendrowski’s final bout: “Jeremy and Frost had wrestled many times throughout the season. It’s very difficult in the sport to beat someone multiple times, as they begin to learn your style and your weaknesses. Jeremy, as a sophomore, wrestled with the poise of a senior and pinned Frost to secure his third-place finish.”

Sendrowski pinned Frost 2:27 into their battle.

Stolz succumbed in his opening 170-pound match to Robert Heatherman of Mt. Ararat/Brunswick, a pin at 45 seconds. That slid him into the consolation bracket, where he opened with a 12-7, OT victory over Alex Vokey of Camden Hills before losing – a pin at 1:42 – to Brandon Lajoie of Westbrook.

Dickman, wrestling at 195, faced off with Chris Wilson of Nokomis to begin the day. Wilson emerged victorious, 9-2. Dickman then matched up with Shayne Welch of Biddeford, with Welch taking the W, a pin at 2:28.

Skowhegan won the team title, scoring 144 points; Marshwood finished second at 123 and Noble third at 112. The three Stormers accrued 16.5 points. They also, however, picked up the team sportsmanship award, a particular point of pride for Cyr, head coach Deron Sharp and the entire team.

“It’s a huge compliment and testament to the character of the kids,” said Cyr of the award.
