Despite leading for the better part of their State Championship matchup with North reps St. Dominic’s Academy on Saturday evening, Feb. 13, Scarborough fell behind in the third and couldn’t come back.
“We played hard and tough,” said Scarborough head coach Caitlin D’Amour of the battle, which played out at the Colisee in Lewiston. “We didn’t shoot nearly enough; we were looking for that pretty, perfect shot and that doesn’t happen in hockey. Bottom line a shot is a shot, and we needed to shoot more.”
Sami Shoebottom scored in the first period for the Storm, giving them a narrow advantage they held onto through the remainder of that period and the entirety of the following period as well. In the third, however, St. Dom’s put up two points – both on powerplays. Scarborough couldn’t regain the lost ground, and fell 2-1.
Scarborough entered the postseason ranked first in the South at 16-1-1, squarely ahead of rivals Falmouth, in second at 14-2-2. The Storm knocked off No. 4 York in the semis 3-0 before facing the Yachtsmen in the Regional Final and winning 5-2.
Meanwhile, in the North, St. Dom’s earned the tournament two-seed, going 16-2 through the regular season. They faced a tough road through the playoffs, but successfully dispatched No. 3 Lewiston/Monmouth/Oak Hill 6-0 in the semis and No. 1 Greely – undefeated to that point – 5-4 in the Regional Final.
“Our D and goalie (McKenzie Cormier) played very well,” said D’Amour, “covering in front and forcing (St. Dom’s) quick forwards to the outside. Offensively, we couldn’t find a rhythm. I think the atmosphere and energy of the rink played with our heads a little bit.
“Dom’s isn’t a team we’ve played over the last few seasons, and their speed was a factor in their winning. Taking three penalties in the third didn’t help us, and although I have my opinions on the reffing, refs don’t win or lose games.”
“Losing by a goal is always tough,” said D’Amour, “but hopefully this gives us the push for next season.”
The Red Storm line up prior to their State Final battle with North reps St. Dom’s on Saturday.
Scarborough goalie Mckenzie Cormier makes a pad save on a shot by Saint Dominic Academy’s Alexandra Hammerton during the second period of Saturday night’s championship game in Lewiston.
