Cape robotics survey available
The newly formed Cape Robotics Parent Advisory Group is requesting input from the community regarding the 2016-2017 season through a short online survey.
The goal for the survey is to convey the number of students interested in robotics and assist the school district in planning and budgeting for the robotics program.

Acts of Kindness food drive
During the week of Feb. 14-20, which is National Acts of Kindness Week, the Scarborough Public Library is partnering with the Scarborough Kindness Project to encourage random acts of kindness throughout the community.
As part of that effort, the library will be holding a food drive throughout that week in support of the Scarborough School Department’s Nutrition Backpack Program. The program prepares backpacks of nonperishable food items for needy children to take home during school vacation weeks.
Donate at the National Acts of Kindness Week drop-off display. Suggested food items include instant potatoes, rice, pasta, canned vegetables, canned meats, such as tuna, chicken and ham, canned chili and soups, Hamburger Helper mix, pancake mix, syrup, crackers and snack foods, such as fruit roll ups and popcorn.
The Nutrition Backpack Program has plenty of peanut butter, jelly, cereal and macaroni and cheese, so those items are not needed.

Gardeners meet
The Scarborough Garden Club will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18, at the recreation hall located in the Hillcrest Retirement Community. The program will be on invasive and foreign plants. Guests are always welcome. Call 510-1371 for more information.
Vote for the best nonprofit
Bangor Savings Bank has kicked off its annual Community Matters More campaign, which allows residents in Maine to vote for their favorite nonprofit in eight separate regions.
During the month of February the bank will take votes online and in person at every branch. In all, Bangor Savings will give out $100,000 to charitable organizations across Maine.
In 2015 the campaign garnered nearly 90,000 votes from Mainers who supported nonprofits of all types and sizes. A total of 48 grants will be awarded to the organizations listed on the ballot and to the top 20 write-in recipients.
The organizations in each of the eight regions, including write-ins, which receive the most number of votes will get $5,000 each. The remaining 60 organizations will each receive $1,000.
The Community Matters More voting takes place now through Feb. 29 and the winners will be announced in April. See www.bangor.com/com to vote or for more information.
Police offer self-defense class
The South Portland Police Department will hold a Women Against Violence and Exploitation self-defense class on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the police station, located at 30 Anthoine St.
This class is specifically designed for female students at South Portland High School and will focus on situations unique to them. Attendees will learn simple and realistic self-defense concepts and principles, designed to give them confidence.
Basic strikes, kicks and blocks will be taught and how to break and counter some common holds. Class size is limited to 20 students. To register, send an email to agiusto@southportland.org. A parental consent form is required for all students under 18.

Community night at Red Claws
The Pond Cove Parents Association in Cape Elizabeth is teaming up with the Maine Red Claws for an afternoon of great basketball and family fun.
A limited number of tickets for the Red Claws game on Sunday, Feb. 28, have been reserved for Cape residents. The game, against the Sioux Falls Skyforce, will tip off at 5 p.m. at the Portland Expo.
As part of the event, children from Cape will be selected to participate in the “High 5 Tunnel” before the game, as well as holding the Living Flag during the National Anthem.
