New Gloucester Fire & Rescue and several area fire crews were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 3:54 p.m. Monday at 36 Moose Ridge Road, a private road off of Snow Hill Road in New Gloucester.
First responders had a difficult time making access to the home due to a steep hill that was covered with the fresh snow. Both of New Gloucester’s engines made multiple attempts to make their way up the steep drive, said Capt. Scott Doyle.
The first engine on scene found heavy fire coming from the mobile home’s windows. Another engine ended up getting stuck across the driveway prohibiting any other apparatus from gaining access to the home. Despite the difficulties, New Gloucester crews had the fire knocked down within 10 minutes of arrival.
New Gloucester was assisted by Gray, Poland, Pownal and Raymond fire departments, Doyle said. Crews pumped water 800 feet up the hill from Snow Hill Road. No one was hurt. Multiple animals were found deceased in the home due to the fire. Approximately 3,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the blaze. The bulk of the fire was found to be in the kitchen, however the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Doyle said.
