The South Portland Democratic Party Caucus will be taking place on Sunday, March 6, in the South Portland High School’s Beal Gym. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and the caucus will begin at 1 p.m. sharp. Everyone is urged to plan to arrive early.
At the caucus, South Portland Democrats will publicly declare their personal presidential preference rather than voting by secret ballot. Delegates to the State Democratic Party Convention will also be determined. Whether Democrats support Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Martin O’Malley or they remain undecided, they are welcome and encouraged to attend.
About 1,000 South Portland Democrats attended the presidential caucus in 2008 and it’s likely there will be another large turnout this year, organizers said. Available parking spaces will be limited, so walking or carpooling to the high school is strongly encouraged. New voters and voters not enrolled in a political party can register at the caucus but lines may be very, very long. The South Portland Democratic City Committee strongly urges people to register to vote with the South Portland City Clerk prior to Caucus Day. Republicans and Green Independent voters wishing to switch their registration to the Democratic Party must do so with the City Clerk no later than Friday, Feb. 19.
Planning for the caucus is already well under way and volunteers are needed to help make it a success. Interested Democrats should attend a meeting of the South Portland Democratic City Committee on Thursday, Feb. 11, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the South Portland Recreation Center in the second floor Teen Center.
