Gov. Paul LePage was in Iowa on Monday to campaign on behalf of Republican presidential candidate Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, his friend and close political ally.

Iowa held its Republican and Democratic caucuses on Monday night.

“Yes, he is in Iowa and he is visiting three caucus sites,” Brent Littlefield, Lepage’s senior political adviser, confirmed Monday night. Littlefield said all three sites were near Des Moines, but he couldn’t be more specific about where LePage would speak.

Christie supported LePage during his successful 2014 re-election campaign, visiting the state on five different occasions. Over time, the men became friends and allies with LePage campaigning for Christie in New Hampshire recently.

Christie asked LePage last month if he would be willing to travel to Iowa on his behalf and the governor agreed, Littlefield said.

First lady Ann LePage didn’t accompany her husband to Iowa.

LePage was expected to return on Tuesday, but could be delayed by a significant winter storm that the National Weather Service is forecasting will impact much of central and northern Iowa late Monday through Tuesday evening.
