Becoming Whole
Ten lepers were cured but only one was healed and made whole. But what is the difference between curing and healing? We tend to think in terms of absolutes; curable or incurable, and forget the areas in between where life unfolds. Curing brings about the absence of disease, but healing is an internal process that we do for ourselves and for others. Becoming whole is learning to live with the ongoing stresses and difficulties of life and come to terms with our own human condition. Healing restores the balance and harmony to the body, mind and spirit and when both curing and healing take place the result can be magical. Curing is what medical science attempts to do through medication, treatment or surgery, but we all have the power to heal by offering forgiveness, kindness, sympathy and understanding, a listening ear, or a gentle touch. And when we have confidence in our power to heal we will, like the one leper who returned to give thanks to Jesus, find that our faith can make us whole.
