AUGUSTA
On Saturday at 10 a.m., Maine author Deborah Gould will discuss her new book, “The Eastern: The Early Years.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing. This program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the program room of Lithgow’s temporary quarters at the Ballard Center, 6 E. Chestnut St. in Augusta.
The first of a two-volume work, “The Eastern” is based on the lives of five families who settled along the Eastern River in East Pittston in the 19th century. Both fiction and social history, The Eastern explores the themes of community and reciprocity in a 19th century agricultural neighborhood. The novel spans 45 years of social change, from 1820 to the end of the Civil War in 1865. A chapter of the book won the 2014 Maine Literary Award for Short Fiction.
