The Scarborough community is being asked for help in making this year’s Operation Cupid a success.

Started by the Scarborough Middle School a decade ago, Operation Cupid aims to let area veterans and first responders know how much they are appreciated. The goal is to give out Valentine cards, with special, heartfelt messages, to those who were willing to put their lives on the line in the service of others.

The cards will be distributed to the Scarborough Veterans’ Home, the Libby-Mitchell American Legion post, residents at the Arthur B. Huot House for Homeless Veterans and active and retired members of Scarborough Public Safety. In addition, gifts of toiletries and other necessities will be given out to veterans in need at the Huot House.

The Builders Club at the middle school, the Key Club at the high school and the K-Kids at Wentworth School are already hard at work, along with members of the Scarborough Kiwanis Club and other community volunteers, to ensure no one is left out in receiving thanks and recognition for their service.

One of the beneficiaries of last year’s Operation Cupid expressed just how much the program means when they said, “your tribute to us is wonderful and it did bring tears to my eyes. I am using the Valentine heart as a bookmark. (And) each time I read, (I) enjoy holding it in my hand. Thank you all.”

Individuals, families and businesses in the community can also offer their support through monetary donations and through providing their own paper heart messages.

All donations and paper hearts must be received no later than Friday, Feb. 5. See the Operation Cupid link on the Wentworth School website or email TGriffin@scarboroughschools.org for more information.
