South Portland police was dispatched to the area of 340 Sawyer St. at approximately 1:02 a.m. Sunday for the report of a taxi driver who had been threatened by a customer. Police said gunshots had reportedly been fired from a handgun during the incident.

Officers interviewed the victim and set up a perimeter around the area. There were several spent shell casings in the roadway in close proximity to the taxi cab that had been parked and abandoned by the driver, who ran from the cab because he was in fear for his life, according to a press release. During the investigation, officers located a male subject inside an apartment at 340 Sawyer St. who matched the description of the suspect and was subsequently identified by the victim.

Adam Stockley, 51, of Cape Elizabeth, was arrested and charged with Class C reckless conduct, Class C criminal threatening and Class B theft. He was transported to the Cumberland County Jail. Bail has been set at $25,000 cash.

The taxi driver was not injured and police say alcohol played a role in the incident. A search warrant was eventually served at 340 Sawyer St. and a handgun was recovered. The investigation is continuing at this point.
