Seven schools duked it out in the early meet at the University of Southern Maine in Gorham on Friday afternoon, the 15th. Greely took first among both boys and girls, while Gray-New Gloucester claimed second on the girls’ side of things and third on the boys’. The Lady Lakers followed the Patriots, while their gentleman counterparts finished sixth.
“We’re having a great season!” said G-NG head coach Todd Mercer. “We set a challenging team goal at the beginning of the season and the team has worked really hard to meet it.”
Mercer nodded to a number of his individual athletes. “During Friday’s meet, senior captain Olivia Giles put fourth a tremendous effort in the 1600M so that she could support the team in meeting their goal. We’re also seeing some great intra team rivalries. Athletes competing with each other, pushing each other in practice and in meets. Our senior girl throwing team of Emma McCallum, Emily Dawkins, Tram Ho and Clara Phillips have been supportive of each other, and pushed each other. Four of the best throwers in the state are all fighting for a spot on the podium every day.”
“This team not only works hard to push each other,” Mercer said, “they have become very focused on technique. They spend time regularly taking video and critiquing each other. Even the distance runners are getting into the weight room and taking strength seriously. This team is everything I’ve always wanted: athletes that show up and work hard every day to achieve the goals they set.”
