Re: “Maine House votes against impeachment of Gov. LePage” (Jan. 15):

On Jan. 14, the Legislature voted to indefinitely table the question of whether there should be a committee to study the impeachment of Gov. Paul LePage, which is a shame.

Why impeach, even though there would be no conviction? To cement an important historical record for this governor.

I love history and am always interested in why something different occurred with a certain person, even though it may be in the long-distant past.

An impeachment would forever be seared into the Maine historical record. People coming after us, such as my 3-year-old grandson, who have no first-hand knowledge of LePage would see that we had a very unusual governor – one who committed wrongs serious enough that he was deemed “worthy” of being the first governor in the state to be impeached.

Maybe even more important, it would give future governors pause when considering similar abuses of power, knowing that they, along with LePage, might also become part of a blemished, stained historical record.
