Re: “Worth a toast: Maine to lower many liquor prices Feb. 1” (Jan. 5):
I might have to stop reading and listening to the news. Why? Because some of the news that is being made is becoming quite ridiculous!
For instance, the aforementioned story. Cutting liquor prices – why not cut food prices? Isn’t food more of a necessity than liquor? Why not cut the cost of insurance? Isn’t having affordable insurance more important than consuming liquor?
Making liquor prices lower is only asking for trouble. There are so many more important issues that need to be addressed by our government than cutting liquor prices. For instance: A raise in Social Security would have been beneficial to recipients. You can’t buy groceries with a bottle of liquor. You can’t pay a bill with a bottle of liquor.
What is happening to our world? We elect our officials to help us, not to create more issues.
When will the government get it right and get us back on the right track? They always make a change that may be beneficial to them but not for the people.
The article states, “The price changes stem from a new way the bureau determines the state’s gross profit from each sale.” What about a way to make our finances better?
The article also states, “The pricing change will initially benefit alcohol consumers and suppliers at the expense of the state.” Benefit alcohol consumers? Tell me: How is alcohol beneficial to anyone’s health?
Besides, not everyone is an alcohol consumer. So how does it benefit the non-consumer of alcohol?
