The State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that an explosion that destroyed a home in the Knox County town of Union was the result of a problem with the propane system.

Two portable propane heaters had been installed in the house during renovations and a malfunction caused the house to fill with propane and then ignite, according to investigators.

The explosion and subsequent fire leveled the two-story farmhouse on Sunk Haze Lane around 3 a.m. but nobody was hurt. The occupants of the house had been staying somewhere else because of renovations.
