This responds to “Bill Nemitz: DHHS cuts hurting those who need medical help the most” (Jan. 6).

I have a developmentally disabled cousin. Chronologically, she is 70; mentally, about 9. That level of impairment not withstanding, given an appropriately professional and compassionate level of constant supervision, my cousin is able to live independently in her own group home apartment.

Fortunately, she lives in Pennsylvania, outside of the clutches of Maine Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew. The notion that persons afflicted with the levels of disability described in Mr. Nemitz’s column need any less than 24-hour-a-day professional care would be laughable if it weren’t so despicable.

Wake up, voters. You blew it two Novembers ago. Throw these bums (the current Republican Party) out the first chance you get.
