Re: “Out of the spotlight, DHHS cuts away at humane care” (Jan. 6):
I was moved by Bill Nemitz’s column concerning the impact of Department of Health and Human Services rule changes on those who need medical help the most.
I was surprised specifically at the need for care of the severely impaired patients at the Waban group home, who obviously do not have the ability to live independently.
A society is only as strong as its care for its weakest members. What on Earth can the state of Maine be thinking in cutting back on funds for Waban and other group homes taking care of seriously ill patients? If anything, they need more funding!
The column on the funding needs of the Waban Projects home for the seriously disabled moved me. DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew is totally wrong. These patients need personal care in a group situation, not independent living conditions.
It is a fantasy to think these patients could live independently in the name of saving the state money. I hope the state does not make the tragic mistake of cutting funds for Waban and other group homes that care for the ill.
