SANFORD — New Year, new resolutions? Maybe it’s time. And for folks ages 60 and older, there’s a new program designed to help you “eat smart and live strong.”

The “Eat Smart, Live Strong” program takes place at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 1 Emerson St., over four Fridays in January. It was designed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, and is being hosted by SNAP-Ed.

Folks who attend will learn ways to add fruits and vegetables to their daily food intake, make healthier choices on a limited budget and be active. There will be tastings too.

The programs are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Jan 8, 15, 22 and 29, and will be presented by a trained nutrition professional.

Rev. Sue Murphy said the program builds on programs already in place at the church such as the Cooking Matters program, which is aimed at kids and families.

“This is for older folks, to try and encourage those in their senior years to ‘eat smart and live strong’” like the title of the program, Murphy said.

Sometimes, even though people have been taught at an early age to eat right and exercise, that doesn’t happen as they get older. Folks get busy and don’t always eat right, Murphy noted, or they live alone – perhaps their spouse has died – and don’t feel like cooking a complete meal for themselves.

Topics include setting goals and following through, classic dishes with a healthy twist and eating healthy on a budget.
