Winter wonderland?

Believe it or not, there are people in these parts that are wishing for snow (complaining even for the lack). I am not one. I remember last year. No, just this morning I was walking the pup, and admiring the snowless beauty of my neighborhood, and while it was cold as it tends to be in the morning, on this first day of winter, not a flake to be seen. Next week’s forecasted temperatures are on the high side, and that makes me happy. I enjoy being outdoors, but only when it’s bearable! For those who like winter sports, fear not, you know it’s inevitable, so enjoy the mild weather while you can.

Safety first

Did you know that there are now AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillators) available should an emergency arise, at the Naples Town Office, the Singer Community Center, and the Naples Town Beach?

This is amazing as these devices certainly save lives. The AEDs were made possible through a grant from the Narragansett One Fund. Do you know how to use one? No worries as the Naples Fire Department hosts CPR classes monthly. The cost of the training is only $14, although donations are accepted to help fund future classes. Contact Deputy Fire Chief Scribner at 595-1253 or mscribner@townofnaples.org for more information.

Happy New Year!

There is so much to do during the months leading up to the holidays. Parties, craft fairs, events. But what about after all the hoopla has ended? There is a sense of calm, most certainly, but also as the cold creeps in, so can isolation and depression that accompanies the forced hibernation the cold weather imposes upon us. We all know it’s been pretty warm, but even if temperatures turn frigid, that’s no reason not to get out and about this January.

The Bureau of Parks and Public Lands is hosting a free First Day Hike on Jan. 1 at Sebago State Park in Naples. The hike, which begins at 10 a.m., is a leisurely 1.5-mile woodlands walk to explore the park. It is recommended you wear warm clothes and footwear. They will even have snacks! What a great way to start off your healthy new year. For more information, call 693-6231 or visit www.maine.gov/sebagolake.

Library hosting ?special events

The Naples Public Library is always a great place to visit in the winter months. Peruse the magazines and books, or take a workshop. On Jan. 9, try Beginning Crochet from 10 a.m. to noon.

Got an e-reader for Christmas, but don’t know how to use it? Learn how on Tuesday, Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to noon. On Saturday, Jan. 23, celebrate winter by creating a paper snowflake, also from 10 a.m. to noon. Please sign up at the Adult Circulation Desk.

New library director

Help me welcome Dani Longley as the new Naples Library Director. I have had the pleasure of knowing Dani for years, as we have children of similar ages. Every time I’ve run into her, I was always better for it!

Dani lives in Naples and has two children. Through the years she has generously given her time to various school and youth groups, such as the Girl Scouts. If you don’t know Dani, you have the opportunity to meet her at the library’s Meet the New Director event on Tuesday, Jan. 5, in the Gathering Room of the library at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Happy holidays to you all and see you in the New Year!

The Naples Public Library invites the public to meet and welcome the new director, Dani Longley, on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. or 6 p.m. in the library’s Gathering Room.Members of the Lake Region Indoor Track Team gear up for their season, often by running sprints in the hallways of the high school. They look like they mean business. Their meets are generally Friday nights at University of Southern Maine in Gorham.  They are fun to watch if you ever have the chance to go cheer them on.
