AUGUSTA — The Allagash Wilderness Waterway will soon begin taking winter camping registrations from hardy souls who want to camp in northern Maine’s vast woods.

Registration for the campgrounds takes place on Saturday at 8 a.m. at the Chamberlain Thoroughfare Bridge ranger station in Piscataquis County.

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is part of the state Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forest’s Bureau of Parks and Lands. It is a 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams through Maine forests. The wilderness waterway has 48 camp sites available at Chamberlain Bridge and Kellogg Brook.

The waterway’s superintendent recommends campers arrive at Chamberlain Bridge before 8 a.m. to assure themselves a site.
