A 22-year-old Bath man has been charged with elevated aggravated assault for allegedly running down a man with his vehicle early Wednesday morning.
According to Lt. Robert Savary of the Bath Police Department, an employee of Bath Iron Works was walking to work on Richardson Street when a car approached. The driver, Savary said, made offensive remarks and the two exchanged words.
The vehicle then drove away but returned minutes later, this time driving toward the pedestrian. Savary said the driver of the vehicle struck the pedestrian as he walked on the side of the road. The pedestrian hit the windshield and was propelled over the vehicle, which sped away.
The BIW employee suffered serious injuries but continued to walk the remaining half mile to his workplace before calling police.
After talking to the victim and interviewing witnesses in the area, police located a 2000 Jetta in a wooded area in Phippsburg. They determined that the vehicle had been involved in an accident and that the driver was James A. Black.
Police arrested Black at his home in Bath and charged him with elevated aggravated assault, a Class A felony.
Black also had been on probation for a Dec. 6 arrest for operating under the influence.
The victim, who was not identified, suffered broken bones in his skull and shoulder but his injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
