First responders to heroin overdoses are not usually the EMTs who respond to 911 calls. They are family members, active heroin users, friends and neighbors. Everyone of these people can have Narcan in their hands today to save a life.

Please share this information. Call your primary care doctor and ask for a prescription. Ask your pharmacist how to administer it easily. The Narcan kits cost about $40 I am told. If you are or know an active heroin user who does not have money for it they may obtain it for free at the Portland Needle Exchange program on India Street or they can help with information. I have found few, if any, providers of care know this.

The law passed (LD 140 on October 12, 2015). I did not know all the information and gathered it over the past few weeks. It need not be anyone’s fault. Please share this information so we may help to save our children, family or someone else’s son or daughter. Please tell everyone, including anyone who is an active heroin user. Sometimes even a person using is with someone else who still has the ability to save them.
