FORT MYERS, FLA. — Chantel Charles scored a game-high 14 points and Liz Wood added 12 points and nine rebounds as the University of Maine women’s basketball team built a 14-point halftime lead and held off LSU on Sunday in the fifth-place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase at Fort Myers, Florida.

Mikaela Gustafsson and Sigi Koizar chipped in nine points apiece for the Black Bears (5-3), who shot 55.6 percent from the floor while holding the Tigers (4-4) to just 27.3-percent shooting.

The Tigers scored the first five points of the game, but the Black Bears responded with a 9-2 run, taking the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Lauren Bodine with 2:47 left in the first quarter.

Maine led by as many as 16 points in the third quarter and never saw its lead dip below eight points in the second half.

LSU was led by Alexis Hyder, who finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, including nine offensive rebounds.

The 41 points by the Tigers was their lowest total of the season.

COLBY 62, BATES 57: Desiree Smith shot 10 of 13 from the floor and finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Mules (4-0) in a non-conference win over the Bobcats (0-4) at Lewiston.

Bates was paced by Allie Coppola, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Bernadette Connors added 14 points for the Bobcats.

Carylanne Wolfington and Mia Diplock chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, for Colby.

HOCKEY

UMASS-BOSTON 4, COLBY 2: Lizzie Aveson and Maren Brown each scored early goals for the Beacons (5-4), who never trailed in a win over the Mules (2-2) at Waterville.

Bre Davis opened the scoring for Colby early in the second period and Sasha Fritts added a goal in the third period.

UNE 8, SALEM STATE 0: Carly Perreault scored a pair of goals and also had two assists for the Nor’easters (3-4-1) as they cruised past the Vikings (3-6) at Biddeford.

Sydney Helmbrecht, Samantha Scobee and Giana Rifici combined on the shutout for the Nor’easters, who outshot the Vikings 62-8. Julianne Sheehan had three points for UNE.
