The Big Night

A few months ago (or was it just yesterday?) I wrote about how much I love Bridgton’s Fourth of July celebration. I recall saying that it was one of the highlights of my year. At the time that I wrote that, I remember thinking that the other highlight for me is the annual Festival of Lights Parade. One year I even got to ride on one of the floats, and I do admit, I felt a little like a movie star.

I can hardly believe that the Four on the Fourth was nearly five months ago and that my Halloween costume has been packed away and that I’m enjoying sandwiches made with leftovers from Thanksgiving. I am a little sad that time is passing so quickly; but, on the other hand…Santa’s on his way!

You can get your first glimpse of him at the parade on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m. This year’s theme is “Your Favorite Christmas Movie.” Mine happens to be “Christmas Vacation.” When I was a teen, that movie played every single day at my house during the Christmas season. Anyway, bring your list, because you can actually have a face-to-face with Mr. Claus at the Community Center following the parade. The line gets long, so I’ll bring my boxing gloves in addition to my Christmas list.

Tree lightings

The Bridgton Hospital Guild will host the annual tree lighting at the front entrance of the hospital campus on Monday, Nov. 30, at 3:30 p.m. There will be carol singing and refreshments served at the Twitchell Cafe? following the ceremony.

The Greater Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce will light the tree in the front yard of the chamber office on Friday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m. Hot cocoa, cookies and maybe a surprise visit from a man in red are also in store.

Fa La La La La

The Lake Region Community Chorus puts on quite a show each holiday season. It’s so nice to take an afternoon or evening to relax in one of the pews at the Twitchell Memorial Chapel and listen to these talented singers. The first show will be on Friday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m. If you like to be in your jammies by the time the sun sets, go to the Sunday show on Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. All are welcome, and donations are gratefully accepted.

They’re not over yet

I do love a good craft fair, and I am happy to say that the Bridgton Health Care Center on the Portland Road will be hosting theirs on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. In addition to local crafters, there will be a 50/50 raffle, lunch and baked goods for sale. The proceeds from the fair will benefit the activity department at the care center.

I went to this fair last year with my mom, and we had a great time. There was something for everyone, and the prices were really reasonable. After shopping, we enjoyed talking with some of the staff while having a cup of tea. I am so glad they are having it again this year.

New art center

An art center and gallery is opening up at On Eagles Wings Wellness Center. Local artist Nelle Ely will be teaching classes and organizing programs at the gallery, which will be open to the public for a fee but will be free to the center’s patients. Artists who would like to donate artwork or teach a class are encouraged to call Ann Ruel at 415-9166.

The center is also having a holiday gift certificate special. Certificates for a two-hour session will be $70 through Dec. 4 and can be purchased in-person or over the phone at 803-8025.

Rec programs

I am happy to report that work is moving right along at Old Town Hall. Although some repairs still need to be done, programs are beginning to resume, including Jumpin’ Jane’s Fitness, Zumba and Tai Chi. Check the town’s website for class times and schedules. Forget New Year’s resolutions; there’s no time like the present to start taking good care of yourself. I’m talking to you, Santa!
