Marking Veterans Day

Hundreds attended the annual Veterans Day commemoration at the Windham Veterans Center on Nov. 11, organized by Windham’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10643 Maine first lady Ann LePage was the guest speaker this year and the other events included Veterans of Foreign Wars student-essay contest winners, dedication of Toby’s Dream, unveiling of the Grand Donor plaque and dedication of the Vietnam War memorial, a part of the national 50th anniversary of that conflict. Local Scout Troops 5 and 805 assisted with details along with many volunteers from the American Legion and Auxiliary.

Town tree lighting

Windham’s community tree lighting will be on Sunday, Nov. 29, from 5-7 p.m. at the Public Safety Building. Join friends and neighbors for caroling, refreshments and photo ops with some favorite North Pole residents.

Wreaths for ?veterans’ graves

Help Libby Jordan of Studio Flora as work continues on providing wreaths for each veteran’s grave in Windham. This is a true community effort. Wreaths will be placed on Saturday, Dec. 5, by volunteers from every corner of town – including veterans, Scouts and many others. Help is needed with the production of bows for the wreaths as well as distribution of the wreaths. Last call for toy workshop, Christmas baskets

Through Thursday, Dec. 3, Windham Food Pantry will be taking applications for Christmas baskets and the annual Toy Workshop. Applications must be in person Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No phone calls, please. Reminder – programs are for Windham residents only and require proof of residency.

Bean supper

American Legion Post 148 will be hosting a bean supper on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Windham Veterans Center from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cost is $8 at the door, under 12 free.

Turkey supper

On Saturday, Nov. 21, from 5-6:30 p.m., a turkey supper will be served at Cornerstone Assembly of God, Cottage Road, Windham. The menu includes turkey, stuffing, gravy, veggies, rolls, cornbread and plenty of homemade desserts. The monthly Movie Night will be after supper. Holiday Fair

Tri-Town Extension will hold a Holiday Fair at the Masonic Hall, Cressey Road, Gorham, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21. A light lunch will be available as well as greens, holiday baskets, knit and needlework, food, sweets, gifts and many other items. For more information, call 892-4249.

Library art exhibit

Artwork by Gwen Schaiberger will be on exhibit at the Windham Public Library through January. More than a dozen of Schaiberger’s vibrant paintings of flowers, landscapes and abstracts adorn the library walls. Stop by the library to see these brilliant pieces.

Book & Bake Sale

On Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Friends of the Windham Public Library will hold their annual Book & Bake Sale. The preview sale is Friday, Nov. 20, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. with a $10 fee for each person entering the building that evening. Prices will be $1 for adult hardcover books, 50 cents for adult paperback; $1 for audio/visual; 25 cents for children’s books (except hardcover chapter books) and 50 cents for hardcover chapter books. Made in Maine fair

On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 5-6, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Route 302, Windham, will hold a Made in Maine Christmas Craft Fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Included are raffles for a homemade quilt and flat screen TV, Cafe? all day Saturday, brunch on Sunday; home-baked goods, theme and holiday gift baskets, Christmas decorating items, hand knits, hand sewn items, jewelry, kids’ corner, gift certificates and tickets for theaters, museums, restaurants and many local businesses.

Help for veterans

On Wednesdays, Dec. 9 and 23, Veterans Service Officer, Matt Haley, will be at the Windham Veterans Center to answer questions and assist veterans and their dependents. You do not need an appointment.
