WESTBROOK Current Publishing, a weekly newspaper publication group in southern Maine, has merged with the Lewiston-based Sun Media Group.

Current Publishing, founded in 2001 by Lee Hews, operates the Current in Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth and South Portland, the American Journal in Westbrook, Tri-Town Weekly in Freeport, Durham and Pownal, and the Lakes Region Weekly that serves Standish, Windham, Raymond, Naples, Bridgton, Casco, Gray and New Gloucester.

Current Publishing also produces a number of other publications throughout the year, including Maine Women, 95 North, the Village, My Generation magazine and Maine Weddings.

Hews and her business partner, Chris Harte, decided to combine forces with Sun Media, publishers of the Sun Journal in Lewiston, the Forecaster group in southern and coastal Maine, along with seven weekly publications in western Maine, in order to further strengthen the products into the best local news coverage for the communities they serve.

Hews will continue as publisher for Current Publishing and, together with Sun Media, publish high-quality, comprehensive community newspapers that will serve both readers and advertisers.

“We will be able to have resources we could not have had if we didn’t combine forces,” she said. “It’s a win-win.”

Stephen Costello, vice president for Sun Media, said “We are very pleased to have Current Publications join our publishing group.”

“Just as Sun Media has been for over 100 years, they have been locally owned and operated for the past 14 years and we are very excited about working together,” he said.
