Ben Merrill works at Yarmouth Boat Yard, along the Royal River. This time of year, the yard’s workers are busy getting their customers’ boats ready for winter. Winterizing boats includes emptying the lines that come into contact with water and circulating them with antifreeze. Then the boats are pulled from the water and stored in a indoor heated storage facility, where exterior maintenance work can be done over the winter. Spring is busy too, as owners prepare their vessels for summer. “It’s kind of backwards when you think about it, for summer to be our slower season,” said Merrill, who has been working at the boat yard for seven years. “This job is something I sort of fell into,” he said. “I’m mechanically inclined, and I can fix about anything with wheels, and most anything without.”
