Player for a Day

Usually I like to wait until December before I start ice skating, but I had the opportunity recently to gear up in full hockey equipment and participate in Sticks and Pucks at Bridgton Academy.

While I admit that I got a kick out of rocking it high-school style by wearing my boyfriend’s hockey jersey, I quickly learned that I’m no hockey player. I’m more of a skate-around-in-circles kind of girl. You, too, can try your hand at hockey by going to Bridgton Academy on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 2-4 p.m. for the next Stick and Pucks session. The cost is $5, and you must wear a helmet to participate.

If regular ice skating is more your speed, public skating takes place on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 2-4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 25, from 12-2 p.m. You can also cheer for the BA hockey team players by attending one of their games. Dates are posted on the school’s website.

Harvest Festival time

The Girl Scouts are hosting a Harvest Festival at Camp Pondicherry on Saturday, Oct. 17, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. There will be geocaching with L.L. Shawnee Peak is also having a fall fest on Oct. 17 from noon-4 p.m. There will be a chili cook-off, pumpkin painting, live entertainment, and beer. I bet the Girl Scouts can’t say the same.

Walk the walk

One day I was walking to the farmers’ market through Pondicherry Park, and I came across a large group of people walking with someone wearing a lab coat. OK, I’m joking about the lab coat, but there really was a great turnout for September’s Walk with a Doc. Upon exiting the park, I noticed that one of the stone benches outside the kiosk had a basket with cider, oatmeal and other seasonal breakfast goodies, obviously there for the walk’s participants. Very sweet. Usually the walk dates are always the last Saturday of the month, but for the upcoming holiday season, the walks will be moved up a week. Mark your calendars for Oct. 24, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19. Come for the treats, then walk them off.

A night at the theater

Comedienne Susan Poulin will perform a live show, “The Moose in Me, the Moose in You” at the Magic Lantern on Monday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and proceeds go to support the Bridgton Public Library. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the library.

Fall art show

Stop by the Community Center now through Nov. 20 to check out an art show being presented by Opportunity Enterprises. The artists have created collages using marbled papers, cotton rag paper, silkscreen printing and paste papers. An outdoor sculpture created with found objects will also be on display. I haven’t seen the show yet, but I definitely plan to make my way over there to check it out. Thank you to all the artists who participated.
