Thumbs up to Miranda Gilman, the other panelists, and the folks who turned up to hear about heroin addiction in York County at a recent forum in Sanford. What folks learned was the extent of the epidemic, and that there are treatments that work. Gilman was blunt about

her situation and her long road through recovery that wasn’t always successful until she began a medication-assisted treatment. She’s been clean for two years. What was clear from the forum was that there needs to be more access to treatment.

Thumbs up to Mother Nature for the stunning displays of fall foliage all over the county. The reds and oranges and yellows are magnificent – and are with us for only a short time. If you haven’t taken a walk or a drive, do so

soon. Other projects can likely wait an hour or two, and soon it will be winter.

Thumbs up to the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, as well as officials from both Biddeford and Arundel for responding so quickly to a report of a pungent smell emanating from a farm in Arundel. While it’s still unclear whether the farm in question

violated any rules, the smell was overwhelming for many residents, and it is good to see that town, city and state took the complaints seriously.

Thumbs up to Old Orchard Beach for its status as the most instagrammed place in Maine. Old Orchard Beach is among the smallest towns, area-wise in the state, but is chockfull of photo opportunities, including the long stretch of sandy beach, The Pier and the amusements at

Palace Playland.
