The Scarborough Free Baptist Church will hold a benefit for Nepal earthquake victims on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. Rick and Celia Wilcox, Nepal and Mt. Scarborough resident Derek Volk will talk about his book, “Chasing the Rabbit: A Dad’s Life Raising a Son on the Spectrum,” at the library on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 6:30 p.m.

The book highlights the significant challenges, heartfelt triumphs, and various coping strategies Derek and his family employed raising their son Dylan, who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of 8.

Teams needed for Trivia Bee

Project GRACE in Scarborough is still seeking teams, consisting of three players each, to compete in its upcoming Trivia Bee. The fundraiser will benefit Project GRACE’s heating fuel fund.

The bee will be held on Thursday, Oct. 29, at Camp Ketcha. Each team is encouraged to create a fun team name and to wear costumes.

The public is also invited to cheer for their favorite team and to enjoy treats by SoPo Catering, groove to the swinging sounds of the Tribute to the Standards band and to play along with the contestants.

The goal for this year’s bee is to raise at least $15,000. Admission for the general public is a suggested donation of $5. See www.triviabee.weebly.com for more information.

Halloween-themed

trip to Salem set

On Saturday, Oct. 24, the South Portland Adult Education program is offering a trip to Salem, Mass. for the community’s annual “Haunted Happenings” Halloween-themed event.

The bus will leave the parking lot at South Portland High School at 8 a.m. and return at approximately 11:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. The event includes haunted tours, haunted houses, psychics and more.

Library offers wool bookmark craft session

In another of its popular Artsy Afternoons adult craft series, the South Portland Public Library will offer a session on creating wool applique bookmarks.

The session will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31, at the main library with local fiber artist Carol Nason.
