The October 4 issue of the Maine Sunday Telegram had an interesting article on the $4.3 million FAA grant as well as $214,000 from Waterville and $214,000 from the state.
This money was used to reconstruct the main runway, buy new equipment, renovate the terminal among other items at the Robert LaFleur Municipal Airport in Waterville.
This airport has a main runway of 5,500 feet. by 100 feet. and a crosswind runway of 2,301 feet by 60 feet. The article goes on to say that the airport averages 44 operations a day split evenly between transient and local traffic.
The article states that last year the airport lost about $100,000, but five or six years ago it operated at a deficit of $130,000 to $150,000. This really makes me wonder how our city fathers think we can keep putting money in our small airport and get a good return. I think it’s time to get a study of how we could really use those 127 acres.
