A Monmouth man was seriously injured early Saturday morning when his car crashed on Route 135.
Monmouth Police Chief Kevin Mulherin said 26-year-old Jared Smith suffered numerous, life-threatening internal injuries in the crash. Mulherin said Smith was being treated Tuesday in the intensive care unit at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.
Smith was alone in his 2010 Audi around 1 a.m. Saturday as he drove east on Route 135. He lost control of the car near the Waugan Road intersection.
“There’s a slight curve there,” Mulherin said. “He didn’t make it.”
Smith’s Audi crossed over the westbound lane and left the road, rolling and going airborne for about 250 feet before hitting a tree.
Mulherin said police are still trying to determine what caused the crash.
“We know speed was a factor,” Mulherin said.
It appears Smith was wearing a seatbelt, Mulherin said.
One lane of Route 135 was closed for about two hours while medics from Winthrop Ambulance removed Smith from the car. The car was destroyed.
Mulherin said no charges have been filed in connection with the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.
