pantry food drive

Westbrook Eagles Aerie 2977 is sponsoring a month-long food drive to benefit the Westbrook Food Pantry.

Bill Babbidge, president of the local Eagles, said Tuesday the drive in conjunction with the national Fraternal Order of Eagles food drive across the country in October. Babbidge said donations in Westbrook can be dropped off at 89 Saco St. daily between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. through October.

“We’re shooting for a big drop-off day on Oct. 25,” he said.

Acceptable donations would be non-perishable items.

Continuum hosts reunion of Saccarappa artists

Downtown artspace Continuum for Creativity is hosting a reunion art exhibition featuring 13 former members of the Saccarappa Art Collective, the group that formerly owned the location on Main Street.

Mary Brooking, a former Saccarappa member and the director of Continuum, said this week that the show will be an opportunity for people to see the former members’ “new artistic visions and share the camaraderie of good old times as well.”

Participating artists will include Andy Curran, Jonathan Eiten, Jim Flahaven, Tanya Fletcher, Jeremy Greene, Caren-Marie Michel, Melissa Post van der Burg, Francine Schrock, Lucy Ellen Smith, Ellen Thayer, Frank Valliere and Julie Vohs. The opening is Friday, Oct. 9 from 5-9 p.m. The show will run through Saturday, Nov. 14.

Registration, polling

Polling hours were confirmed in Westbrook this week for the Nov. 3 election, which will feature a handful of City Council and School Committee races.

At Monday’s City Council meeting, Westbrook City Clerk Angela Holmes said voter registration will take place during the normal clerk’s office hours, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday throughFriday, with extended hours for registration to be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29.

Holmes said polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on Election Day. Holmes said this year, there will be a few new voting booths in each polling location.

Monday marked the 30-day mark before the election, and campaign signs for the local races have been popping up in the city. Absentee voting is also under way, with Holmes stating that voting prior to the election is available at City Hall.

Absentee voting will also be taking place at various senior housing facilities throughout Westbrook. On Oct. 15, the city will be hosting absentee voting hours at Rocky Hill, Dolly Farm, Springbrook and Avita of Stroudwater. On Oct. 22, the locations are Millbrook Estates, Presumpscot Place, Riverview Terrace and Larrabee Village.

Unity interfaith celebration

Unity of Greater Portland will host an interfaith and intercultural celebration with a showing of “Waking in Oak Creek” at 6:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 54 River Road, Windham.

“A community rocked by hate is awakened and transformed by the forgiveness shown by the Sikhs after six worshipers at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin are killed by a white supremacist,” Unity said in a statement.

The Tate House Museum, built in 1755, will host tours of the Stroudwater Burying Ground from noon-4 p.m. on Saturdays, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24.

“The picturesque cemetery, located along the Stroudwater River, is the final resting place for many prominent members of the Stroudwater community,” Betty Janus, museum site coordinator, said in an announcement.

Museum volunteer “specters” will portray some of the celebrated residents buried there and their colorful tales. Mast agent for the Royal British Navy, George and Mary Tate, are interred there along with the first woman honored with lowering the flag to half-staff when she died.

Tickets for the cemetery tour, available at the museum, 1267 Westbrook St., Portland, are $12 and $6 for children under 12.
