Thumbs up to the 50 or so volunteers who went out and swept the sands of Old Orchard Beach clean Saturday, as part of Coastweek – a week-long effort organized by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Coastal Program to remove trash from the state’s
coastal lands and waters. Volunteers got rid of cigarette butts, plastic cups, plastic foam, and other debris. Good going.
Thumbs up to the City of Sanford for taking the initiative to build a 10 gigabit, 32-mile fiber broadband network. It is billed as what the city needs to attract new commerce and allow the current business community able to be more nimble. Look for more on this topic on
Saturday’s editorial pages.
Thumbs up to all public safety and emergency preparedness staff who work to keep citizens safe during storms and keep them informed of any upcoming potential hazardous weather conditions. These people work tirelessly, at times for hours on end, and save lives. For
more information on what you can do at home to prepare for a storm, go to www.ready.gov.
Thumbs up to Department of Marine Resources Commissioner Patrick Keliher and the lobstermen and women of Zone G who spent a few hours on Tuesday discussing how to improve entry and exit regulations and the general picture of the industry in 2015. Keliher’s meetings much-needed dialogue between the DMR and the men and
provide women it regulates, and many in attendance appreciated the opportunity to voice their concerns. Hopefully when the DMR works with the legislature to overhaul some of these regulations, they will pass a bill that balances statewide fishery considerations with the autonomy of each zone.
Thumbs up to INCON in Saco, which develop and manufactures online monitors for power utilities and others. The company’s design of a monitor that detects leaks of a potent greenhouse gas earlier than similar systems garnered it the Governor’s Award for Environmental
Excellence. Gov. Paul LePage came to Saco Tuesday to personally deliver the award to the company, which was founded in 1978.
