Need to gather some reading material for the winter?
Hundreds of books will be available this weekend during the annual book sale to benefit programming at the Topsham Public Library.
The book sale is the Friends of Topsham Public Library’s largest annual fundraiser and according to Friends President Monique Marchilli-Barker, raises approximately $8,000. The money goes to the library for its programming — things like story time, the concert series and the arts programs.
Library director Susan Preece said this is the most organized book sale around. There will be many volunteers on hand, easily identifiable who can direct patrons if they are looking for a specific book or genre. The Friends have been collecting books since spring.
Marchilli-Barker said there are hundreds of books that range from children’s picture books and easy readers to young adult and teen books to horror, mysteries and history and politics — which includes autobiographies and biographies. There is also a Maine and New England table.
Sponsors of the book tables at $100 include Bank of Maine, Bar Harbor Bank and Trust, Black Lantern Bed and Breakfast, Keith Spiro Photography, MSA Architects, Lynch and Newman, LLC, Curtis Obery DMD and Topsham Garden Club.
The book sale starts Friday night with the preview sale for members of the Friends of Topsham Library. The event runs 5 to 7 p.m. and membership is available at the door. Membership is $15 per person or $25 for a family and can be paid by cash, credit or check.
The sale will run Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday shoppers can fill a brown bag with books for $3 a bag.
Books are donated from community members and the library will pull some books out of its circulation based on criteria such as how often they have been checked out.
Preece said the thing that is neat about the book sale is that the library gets first dibs at books which provides it the opportunity to upgrade some of its existing collection.
“We also get the value of the dollars that the Friends raise, which goes directly to programming. Everything they make they give back to us,” Preece said. “We are very excited and very grateful for the support.”
