BATH

The start of a new school year restarts the Bath Back Pack Program, and kicks off their second annual BBPP Fundraising Campaign.

A recent survey of teachers and parents of students at Dike Newell School, who participated in the Bath Back Pack program last year, have reported positive benefits of the program. Parents said the program helps them stretch their family’s food budget and has helped out with their child’s academic performance. More than half of teachers and coordinators reported better attendance from students receiving weekend food from the BBBP, and 80 percent reported fewer complaints of hunger.

Through the effort of over 50 volunteers, who help prepare food and snacks for weekend meals to food-insecure children, 20 local churches, businesses, and organizations and nearly 100 other individuals, over $14,500 has already been raised to support BBPP this year. Because of continued support, BBPP has expanded to assist at least 25 students at Fisher-Mitchell School for the 2015-2016 academic year.

Students can be provided with weekend meals for the school year for $225.

The BBPP Steering Committee has set a goal of $20,000 to meet the needs of Bath elementary students at both Dike-Newell and Fisher Mitchell Schools who would otherwise come to school on Monday mornings hungry.
