What Knot Farm on River Road in Standish is sponsoring a barbecue at the Steep Falls Farmers Market, located at the Steep Falls Gazebo, on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

The farm will be offering their slow-cooked beef brisket, hamburgers and beef and barley soup. The event will help raise money for children receiving care at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Julie Smith and her husband, Tim, owners of What Knot Farm, participated in a horse trail ride for St. Jude several years ago and in 2014, decided they wanted to sponsor a trail ride again to benefit the hospital. Unfortunately, Julie was diagnosed with lung cancer before the ride and was too weak from her chemotherapy to participate in such a strenuous activity, so instead, the Smiths settled on having a barbecue to raise the funds.

“I don’t think when she started that, like any of us, she ever thought she herself would be diagnosed with cancer,” said Steep Falls Farmers Market community volunteer Maurie Hill.

The money that is raised at the barbecue goes to support the room and board of families who stay with their child while the child is undergoing treatment at St. Jude.

Menu and pricing for the barbecue is as follows; Barbecue brisket sandwich: $5; hamburger or veggie burger with all the fixings: $4; bowl of beef and barley soup: $2; soda: $ 1; desserts: $1 and up; lemonade: $1

Salad, vegetable side, chips and bottled water will be served for free with a purchase of a main course option.
