Augusta police are looking for those responsible for spray-painting more than a half-dozen cars on the city’s east side Sunday night, many with obscene images.

Augusta police Sgt. Christian Behr said Monday morning that at least eight vehicles and one street sign were tagged with spray paint between Glenridge Drive, off Hospital Street, in the south and Elm Avenue, off Bangor Street, in the north. The graffiti apparently occurred between 11 p.m. Sunday and 6:30 a.m. Monday.

All of the cars were hit with black paint, predominantly on the sides facing the street, Behr said. The cars apparently were chosen randomly.

“It’s going to cause them a lot of issues as far as getting the paint off,” Behr said.

The graffiti included obscene images, such as genitals, and words, Behr said. He predicted removing the paint, or covering it, will be difficult and perhaps costly. At least one of the cars was painted on the driver’s side window, making it difficult to see out.

“The images depicted, they’re going to want to have that removed as soon as possible because it looks atrocious,” Behr said.

Police were investigating Monday morning even as new reports streamed in. Behr said police were trying to identify suspects.

He urged anyone whose property was tagged or anyone who noticed suspicious activity in the area to call Augusta police at 626-2370.
