BATH
The Mustard Seed Bookstore, at 74 Front St. in Bath, has announced its Author Events for September. Books will be available for purchase and signing at each event.
Food blogger and author Elissa Altman will begin the month from 7- 8:30 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 10.
Her new book is titled “Poor Man’s Feast: A Love Story of Comfort, Desire, and the Art of Simple Cooking.” Altman began a blog post, called “Poor Man’s Feast,” in 2008.
Having been a writer for food magazines, a food critic, and food radio guest for a number of years, she had a vision for what she wanted to do.
“When I started ‘Poor Man’s Feast’ in 2008, it was my goal to create a narrative about the way we feed ourselves and others in our homes, in our lives, in our collective past. I wanted to talk about simple food as the thing that brings us together as people, rather than divides us,” she said.
Next at Mustard Seed, Bath area residents Wendy Ulmer and Sandy Crabtree will launch their newest book from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 12. This new title is a children’s board book called “One Green Tree, Ten Chickadees.” Drawing on the popular response to last year’s collaboration, “My Twelve Days of Maine Christmas,” winner of the 2014 Spark Award, Ulmer and Crabtree have designed a counting book, with artwork focusing on New England scenes.
Ulmer is the author of five books for children, and Crabtree’s artwork is in many private and corporate collections. The signing will be held outside the storefront, weather permitting. Refreshments will be served.
Peaks Island resident Anne O’Brien will visit the book store during the final Art Walk of the season, from 4-7 p.m. Fridau, Sept., 18. Her new book, “I’m New Here,” focuses on immigrant children entering schools in the United States, and the fears and joys they encounter. Three students, all from other countries, enter their new American schools and must learn English to read and write in their new setting. They gain confidence in themselves in this new country, without losing a love of their home country. This event is scheduled during National Welcoming Week, (Sept. 12-20), a nationwide event that highlights the contributions of immigrants throughout America. Teachers and students are welcome to attend, and refreshments will be served.
Rounding out the month, Lea Wait, local author of children’s historical fiction, and two adult mystery series, will hold a book signing from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. This event was postponed from August.
Wait is well known for her “Antique Print Mysteries,” and the recently penned “Mainely Needlepoint Mystery” series. She will be speaking and signing her newest young adult historical fiction book, “Uncertain Glory.” This title was an Agatha Award Best Children/Young Adult nominee. She will also be speaking on her newest installment of the “Mainely Needlepoint” series, “Threads of Evidence.” Wait’s other books will be available as well.
Julie Shea, owner of the new bookstore in downtown Bath, stated that the store’s author events have drawn a wide array of people.
“We have appreciated the delightful response to the author events, and look forward to hosting more in the future. We readers love to hear from authors, speaking on their craft and genre. Each author we’ve hosted has graciously presented a content rich program and thrilled attendees with a reading from their books. They are humble people, willing to share their love of writing with the general public. We are grateful to each and every one who has graced our store,” she said.
