BATH — Registration opens Wednesday, Sept. 9, for an introductory coding class. The class is free and is open to students in grades five through eight. Participants will learn fundamentals of coding by working with an online program called Scratch, a project of the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab. Class members will learn coding principles that will eventually allow them to create simple animations, games, and web pages. All Scratch projects can be shared with other users through its online learning community.
Pre- registration is required, and class size is limited to six. The classes begin Wednesday, September 23 and will continue for six consecutive Wednesdays through Oct. 28. It will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the library’s 2nd floor Community Room.
Amy Kerr will teach the classes. Kerr is a Bath resident who designs and produces interactive educational materials. She began her career at Microsoft and then started her own company after moving to Maine. She has an M.S. in Technical Communications, and is an active member of the Scratch online community, which she discovered while researching resources for kids who love computers and video games.
