Four puppies and two adult dogs confiscated by the Buxton Police Department on Aug. 27 will be available for adoption at the Westbrook-based Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland on Tuesday, Sept. 1, beginning at 11 a.m.

Eighteen dogs were taken from the home due to inhumane conditions, according to authorities. The dogs range in age from 2 weeks to 3 years, and are a variety of breeds. The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland works collaboratively with local police departments and is the contracting animal shelter with the town of Buxton.

Four 8-week-old puppies and two 3-year-old dogs from the Buxton confiscation will be available for adoption Tuesday. The availability of the remaining 12 dogs will depend on spay/neuter procedures and socialization/enrichment progress in their foster homes. Many of the dogs were found to be significantly under-socialized, according to the shelter. They have been placed into foster homes to receive one-on-one care and attention.

The shelter is located at 446 Stroudwater St. Animals are adopted on a first-come, first-served basis.
